Nice to meet you. Welcome to my first (of hopefully many) blog posts. My name is Cameron and I’m a South African that loves travelling more than possibly anything, with the notable exceptions of Indian chai, raas malai and litchis. This blog is for me to create a record of some (mis)adventures, tips, tricks and share them with others. A lot of my family and friends are interested in hearing stories and several have recommended that I write a book. I’ve preemptively created this blog so that I have somewhere to turn them to. No one should be forced to pay for my barely coherent travel stories. Furthermore, I have a tendency to forget things and this will help me remember and relive some of my fonder memories. Other than that I really like writing and would like to get better.
A bit about myself, you already now that I love travelling, chai, raas malai and litchis but there is more to me than that. I don’t know how to keep quiet, am the third favourite son (of two), think I am the funniest person on the planet (bar Bill Burr and Conan O’Brien) and need a daily fix of r/illegallysmolcats. I’m a South African that has been travelling since the age of 12. I’ve had the privilege of being able to travel with my parents and younger brother since. However, after an unfortunate incident in 2018, thereafter COVID (and subsequent updates and patches) and personally, the worst of all, my Master’s degree. I decided to throw caution to the wind and started solo travelling. Starting in 2022, I went to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Thailand (again) , Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Borneo, Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal and finally came back home.
My travels sparked something in me that had been dormant until that point. I was filled with wonder, curiousity (hence the name of my website) and this general sense that until then I had been merely existing. That spark invigorated and challenged me. What was originally supposed to be a 6-month adventure ballooned into 18-months. I learnt more about myself, nature, culture, the kindness in the world and finally realised that there was more to life than I had thought. Growing as a person day by day, doing things I would only see people do on TV, things I thought would forever be out of my reach. I was and still am addicted.
Until my next adventure, this blog will detail my adventures until this point. A bit of a mistake on my side, I really should have started this blog when I was on the road. No matter, “The best time to do something is yesterday, the second best time is now.” I hope you enjoy reading all of these stories as much as I will enjoy writing them. Thanks for embarking on this journey with me 🙂
