PACKING LIST FOR SOUTH EAST ASIA

This was tough. I spent a long time researching and deciding what was needed for a backpacking trip through SE Asia. I fell in love with the idea of only carrying one backpack, that was under 8kg. That way I would not have to pay extra luggage fees 1. Furthermore, it would be convenient to carry and small enough to fit in all those hard to reach places. I decided on one of the Osprey 40L backpacks. It was small, convenient and suited my purposes at the time.

Looking back I realise now that one doesn’t need much. All you need is money and a passport. Money can solve all problems2

I digress, here as aforementioned is a new and updated guide to my essential packing list for South East Asia

The list

  • Aforementioned backpack that can fit in carry-on
  • Smaller throwaway backpack as a day bag
  • Micro fibre towel
  • Toiletries, incl. an electric shaver, nail clippers and a tweezer
  • Medication
  • Sunscreen
  • Small first aid kit
  • Sleeping bag liner
  • Hiking shoes
  • Sandals
  • Small camera
  • Journal
  • Stationary i.e. pens, pencils and a writing pad
  • Cash – USD
  • Shirts
  • Shorts
  • Swim wear
  • A jacket
  • A beanie
  • A thin long pants or sarong to use when visiting a temple
  • Socks, underwear etc.
  • Lightweight two-man tent
  • A good book (can generally exchange at a hostel)
  • International driver’s permit accompanied by your licence
  • Binoculars
  • Plastic Poncho, not those raincoats that cost an arm and a leg
  • Snorkel and mask
  • Yoga mat, can also serve as a sleeping mat
  • Pack of cards

Overall, this packing list for South East Asia has all the fundamental things one needs. Don’t worry if you miss anything, or more likely, I’ve forgotten to mention it. You could probably get it really cheap there. Good luck and safe travels.

Cheerio 🙂

  1. I am quite cheap… ↩︎
  2. Except for that deep, dark existential dread one feels just before going to sleep at night, wondering if you’d wake up in the morning ↩︎
