Being in Chiang Mai
At this point, I had been in Chiang Mai for some time. Honestly, it was not my favourite place. It did not have the hustle and bustle of Bangkok nor the spectacular natural scenery of the countryside. It was like the Pretoria1 of Thailand, except there were more Thai people… I did not know what to do, where to go and was alone : (
Long story short, I was bored. I wanted to move on, only one problem… I had no idea where else to go23. However, I was convinced by some of my hostel mates to stay over until Saturday when there would be a massive night market. Not having anything4 better to do I decided to stay.
The Chiang Mai Saturday night market
The night market was alright, most of them are the same. There is food and drink, boba tea, sometimes animals. I walked around with my signature vacant facial expression5. It was quite easy to find good food in Thailand. Most food is ridiculously cheap, especially in the night markets. I am very specific when it comes to food though. Food must be tasty, cheap and filling i.e. it has to be banging for the buck. Unfortunately, I also get tired of eating the same foods (or types of foods) and need a variety.
Running into some American friends from my first day in Bangkok
I walked around alone and ran into some characters that I had met on the train after my flight. We chatted a bit and they mentioned that they saw Rainn Wilson. He was at the market. I had no idea who tf that was. They explained that he was Dwight Schrute from, “The Office”. He was here to film some travel cooking show.
That really surprised me because that was my comfort show during the pandemic and he was here. Oh well, I thought little of it and just continued on my merry way.
Meeting Rainn Wilson
I was walking alone and munching on some Thai snack when suddenly I see a shadow – it was night time. I look up, and up… and up and see Dwight Schrute towering over me6. Thankfully, I just exclaim, “Oh! Rainn Wilson”7. He chats to me for a bit (I mean like basic pleasantries for 20/30 seconds) and then heads off into the distance – I could still see him even though he was 7 km away. There were probably ~100 people following him. I was quite shocked. I didn’t think that “The Office” was that famous in Thailand.

- He is a lot taller than one expects ↩︎
- Thank god I had learnt his real name moments ago. Apparently, he doesn’t like it when people only associate him with Dwight ↩︎
